Portuguese Sweet Bread WW Challenge

Portuguese Massa Sovada or Sweet Bread is a recipe deeply rooted in our culture. Massa Sovada originated in the Azores Islands where my family is from. It was usually made for religious or special occasions like Easter, Christmas or family events.

Growing up my mom made homemade Massa at least twice a year. Always at Easter. For Easter tradition is to make Folar da Pascoa, Easter Bread, which is the sweet bread with eggs placed inside or on the tops as decoration for Easter. My mom would always make one slightly under-cooked for me. I know...weird. But I used to love it.
I have never had the need to attempt making massa myself. Like I'd mentioned before my mom has been making it forever. And when she would make it it was a big batch. We are talking mixing and kneading by hand, in a big mixing basin. The old school way. She would always make at least 8 of them and they didn't last long.

This year because of my moms arthritis and the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic she didn't end up making any. So with the help of YouTube I made my first batch of Massa! I found an easy recipe to follow and because I am a visual learner being able to watch Leonor going step by step was amazing. You can find her video here...although it is in Portuguese. I have translated the recipe here

Being on myWW (formerly Weight Watchers) I try not to tell myself I can't have what I want. So when it comes to recipes like this one...traditional, family favourites I hesitate to modify them or "WW" them. But I wanted to give this one a try. My Light WW version of this recipe is only 2-3SP vs the 5SP for the original.

The Light version of the recipe is light and fluffy and tastes great. But...if you have had the original which has real sugar, and butter...you will definitely notice the difference. I crunched the numbers for the points if I use Monkfruit sugar instead of Stevia. This brings the points up to 4. In my opinion, yes you can use it, but personally if I'm pushing it to 4SP I might as well just make the original for 5SP and enjoy the real sugar and butter. The Light version is definitely a great option for a nightly treat with a hot cup of tea.

So here you have it...try one...or try them both. Let me know what you think.
